In-person absentee voting is now available ahead of the September 10 election at the Palo Alto County Auditor’s Office, located inside the county courthouse at 1010 Broadway St. in Emmetsburg. Eligible voters can cast a ballot weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. A valid ID is required. This option will be available until September 9. Registered voters also have the option of obtaining a mailed absentee ballot by completing a request form and returning it to the auditor's office. The deadline to submit this request is August 26. Ballots must be received by the auditor’s office before the polls close at 8:00 p.m. on election day to be considered for counting. On the ballot is a measure asking voters to consider raising the district’s debt levy limit to $4.05 per $1,000 of taxable property value. Officially, this vote would not increase taxes, but instead, gives ECSD the option to raise the levy in the future if voters approve a project. The Emmetsburg School Board has approved a $29.75 million bond issue question that will appear on the ballot Tuesday, November 5. These funds would be used to build a new 65,000 square-foot elementary school on undeveloped property east of ILCC for students in preschool to 4th grade. Our community will also vote in a September 10 election to consider raising the district’s debt service levy limit as part of this proposed project. Learn more about what’s on the ballot and how these measures would improve safety and security and provide more resources for our students by visiting https://www.emmetsburgbond.org.

The oldest portions of West Elementary School first welcomed students in 1952. Renovations and additions have occurred in the decades since, but the school’s age presents challenges for our young students and staff. The long list of issues include: ➡️Outdated heating systems and window air conditioners ➡️Dated and damaged floors, fixtures, and furnishings ➡️Aging windows prone to leaks with many lacking screens ➡️Old plumbing and hardware that is difficult to repair ➡️Narrow hallways and doorways that don’t meet modern standards ➡️Poor configurations and insufficient storage ➡️Music education taught in a portable building placed in the 1970s as a “temporary” solution Learn more about the potential solutions on the ballot September 10 and November 5 that would provide the funds needed to build a new school: https://www.emmetsburgbond.org
