In-person absentee voting is available weekdays at the Palo Alto County Auditor’s Office until September 9. This office is located inside the county courthouse in Emmetsburg. The auditor’s office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and a valid ID will be needed. On the ballot is a measure for Emmetsburg CSD seeking permission to increase its debt levy limit. This vote would not increase property taxes, but instead, gives the district the option to raise the levy in the future if voters approve a project. On Tuesday, September 10, residents of Emmetsburg Community School District will vote in a ballot question seeking permission to increase the district’s debt levy limit. Below is the exact language voters will see on the ballot: “Shall the Board of Directors of the Emmetsburg Community School District in the County of Palo Alto, State of Iowa, be authorized to levy annually a tax exceeding Two Dollars and Seventy Cents ($2.70) per Thousand Dollars ($1,000), but not exceeding Four Dollars and Five Cents ($4.05) per Thousand Dollars ($1,000) of the assessed value of the taxable property within said school corporation to pay the principal of and interest on bonded indebtedness of said school corporation, it being understood that the approval of this public measure shall not limit the source of payment of the bonds and interest, but shall only operate to restrict the amount of bonds which may be issued?” This measure is the first step in our plan to construct a new PK-4 school that provides our youngest learners with a safe and high-quality learning environment. West Elementary School has proudly educated our community’s youngest children for more than 70 years. However, facility and infrastructure challenges make it difficult for 21st century education to take place at the school today. Our community is poised to consider ballot measures September 10 and November 5. If both are approved, they would allow the district to construct a new elementary school and provide our students with the modern learning environment and resources they need to thrive. In-person absentee voting is now available ahead of the September 10 election at the Palo Alto County Auditor’s Office, located inside the county courthouse at 1010 Broadway St. in Emmetsburg. Eligible voters can cast a ballot weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. A valid ID is required. This option will be available until September 9. Registered voters also have the option of obtaining a mailed absentee ballot by completing a request form and returning it to the auditor's office. The deadline to submit this request is August 26. The Emmetsburg School Board has approved a $29.75 million bond issue question that will appear on the ballot Tuesday, November 5. These funds would be used to build a new 65,000 square-foot elementary school on undeveloped property east of ILCC for students in preschool to 4th grade. Our community will also vote in a September 10 election to consider raising the district’s debt service levy limit as part of this proposed project. Learn more about what’s on the ballot and how these measures would improve safety and security and provide more resources for our students by visiting https://www.emmetsburgbond.org.
